Senior Underwriter (Full Time)
Job Description
The Senior Underwriter is technically advanced within the Underwriting department, a leader in risk evaluation and a conduit to the Vice President of Underwriting. This position has the responsibility of making decisions that pertain to complex risks within the Company’s appetite. The Senior Underwriter position supports the efforts in guiding the Underwriting Team with the strategy and guidelines that have been set as part of the Company’s strategies and goals.
The Senior Underwriter role includes partnering and supporting the Vice President of Underwriting in setting guidelines for underwriting practices, determining acceptable risk and premium levels, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This position must learn industry trends and regulatory changes in licensed states to adapt policies accordingly. They will be a clear and transparent communicator who works collaboratively to build consensus. This person will problem-solve and work to understand the underlying drivers of the responsible policy portfolio.
The Senior Underwriter will underwrite policies within their underwriting authority, with limited guidance from leadership. This person can make analytical decisions based on receipt of data analytics and information provided. This person is also capable of structuring and pricing risks to profitability. Extensive knowledge of underwriting complex policies and those of multi-faceted exposures is paramount to this position.
The Senior Underwriter currently reports directly to the Vice President of Underwriting of Integris Group.
Responsibilities and Competencies
• Identifies risk exposures and qualitatively assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the book of business
• Determine terms and conditions, supports recommendations with sound documentation and underwriting justifications
• Follows Underwriting Guidelines and Strategies and executes toward personal and production objectives
• Retains complex files and helps solicit new business submissions from agents and brokers
• Ability to market and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability while achieving production, renewal retention and rate goals
• Proven track record of maintaining strong broker and client relationships
• Retains renewal files and helps solicit new business submissions from agents and brokers
• Leverages market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business
• Contributes ideas for product development and participates in development and execution
• Contributes to team projects (e.g., process / tool improvement)
• Collaborates effectively across teams, stakeholders, and partners
• Participates in mentoring underwriters and new hires
• May analyze department’s portfolio and make suggestions for development along with recognizing and communicating emerging trends of exposures
• Strong communication skills and service excellence in client response time
• Participate in client meetings and marketing calls
• Achieve production, profitability, renewal retention & rate goals
Financial Metrics (in conjunction with the Vice President of Underwriting) that includes:
• Participates in monitoring the profitability of the portfolio, in coordination with actuarial resources, by analyzing territorial or medical specialty financial performance data, such as loss ratios and expense ratios, to identify areas for remediation.
Regulatory Awareness (in conjunction with the Vice President of Underwriting) that includes:
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements by staying informed about relevant laws and regulations.
• Implement policies and procedures to ensure the company’s underwriting practices comply with the various Integris carrier’s state (and any Federal) regulations.
• Ensure that all policy documentation is up-to-date and accurately reflects the company’s underwriting practices.
Qualifications and Skills
• A minimum of 7-10 years of experience with a P&C carrier
• At least 5 years of experience specific to Medical Professional Liability (MPL), underwriting preferred
• Producer’s License: General Lines: Property & Casualty Insurance Agent or equivalent (i.e., if a FL residence, should be FL 2-20)
• Bachelor's degree is required; or 5-10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Strong analytical skills and ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, underwriting guidelines and manuals, loss runs, and other industry reports
• Ability to write reports and business correspondence
• Comfortable and effective in presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers
• Knowledge of state regulatory filing requirements
• Ability to form effective and trusting relationships with all parties
• Ability to articulate views, attain group-thought leadership, analyze data for insights, weigh alternatives, own the final decision, and communicate decisions clearly
• Ability to proactively assess processes/workflows, make recommendations and implement changes for operating and cost efficiencies
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word Duplicate
• High-level organizational skills to coordinate work to meet strict deadlines
• Strong communication skills and the ability to demonstrate and maintain confidentiality
• Occasional travel to all Integris offices (Glastonbury, Jacksonville, and Atlanta)
Location
This position is located in Jacksonville, FL. The Company currently follows a hybrid office/remote work schedule:
• Tuesday-Thursday – In office
• Monday and Friday – Option to work remotely (following completion 90-day probationary period)
